Day 6: Chilly breeze, the good cheese, frosted tips and Methven Snow

Yesterday afternoon’s predicted snow didn’t quite eventuate into the overnight dump of powder that we’d hoped for, and instead this morning the mountain greeted us with blue skies, chilly wind and plenty of “dust over crust”. Despite the coldest temperatures yet, the kids got straight back into it, getting as many runs in as they could before their 11am lessons.

In fact, they were so pumped that, in the 5 minutes of waiting time before the start of the lesson, a massive snowball fight broke out and no one was safe, not the teachers, not the instructors, not even a couple of civilians who wondered a little too close to the action. Bobo proving to be one of the most ruthless snowball slingers, with a precision arm and wicked stealth mode which meant no one saw her coming.

The mood at lunch was energetic as we cracked open the good cheese to go on their car park barbeque hamburgers. They were all a chatter with their experiences and barely stuck around to swallow their food before heading back to make the most of the afternoon.

The day was going splendidly, according to Mario: “The best snow we have had yet”. That is until, around 2:45pm, when a monstrous storm cloud rolled in, bringing with it snow, sleet and a thick fog that blanketed the mountaintop. Fortunately, everyone came down off the mountain unscathed, our kids showing what they’re made of, sticking together and navigating their way down the well-worn paths to safety. They were all a buzz with stories of their adventures down the hill together and were pretty impressed with their new hair dos, the plummeting temperatures giving them quite literal ‘frosted tips’.

With the below zero temperatures outside, tonight promised to be a fairly quiet one, with the kids bunkering down to play board games, shoot some pool and read in the comfort of the Ski Time lodge.

That was until... the snow flurried into the town of Methven, a rare sight even for the locals. What was one moment, a quiet, subdued lounging evening, quickly became one of snow balls, snow angels and a fantastic snowman. It was a truly joyous moment watching the kids run around in the snow and one that will no doubt be a memory they cherish forever.

Shout out:
  • To Manav and Nissanth, who - after relentlessly practising their snowboarding skills - crushed their first blue run ‘Broadway'
  • To our experienced skiers Emma, Kara and Beth who made it down a black run 'Race Hill'
  • To Felix, for his monster stack on the Terrain Park
  • To Stephen, for his monster slide down 'Race Hill'
