Day 2: Blue skies, baby giraffes, snowballs and determination

What a day on the mountain!

9 am lessons mean one thing: an early start! 6am was ‘rise and shine’ and after a quick breakfast, ski passes were handed out, the bus was boarded and we began the 40min journey up the hill and into the snow. First timers ‘ooohed’ and ‘aaaahed’ at the spectacular sight of Mount Hutt’s white capped peaks against the big blue sky and beaming sun; they were right, what a pearler of a day! Absolutely MINT :)

Into the snow shop we went for boot fittings, snow boards, skis, poles and wrist guards and when all was said and done, the kids trundled out into the snow in what can only be described as a herd of baby giraffes learning how to walk. But, with beaming smiles and nervous jitters they made their way to their first lessons of the tour and boy did they take to it.

It wasn’t long before most of the beginners were off the magic carpet and onto the green runs, eager to try their skills on the slopes. The traditional snowball slinging started early this year with Alyssa kicking it off and the others quick to follow; pelting each other and of course, their teachers.

Felix showed his snowboarding prowess, the only boarder to make his way to the summit on the first day. Our experienced skiers: Emma, Kara, Lochlan and Beth joined him at the top to enjoy the stunning view and carved up the slopes like pros. In an amazing feat, all of the first time boarders made it down the green run ‘Highway 72’ with many feeling confident enough to take on their first blue run ‘Broadway’.

A day filled with smiles, sunshine, mint snow conditions, spills and thrills meant a quiet bus trip back with many of our champions napping on the way home. This evening, they’ve strolled around Methven and settled in for some card games and Wii action. All in all, a ripper start to the trip.
